Chapter 1. Should You Follow Your Passion?

1.1: Follow Your Passion?

Passion is not a fixed destination, it is a starting point, a signal that helps guide your career toward work that is fulfilling and meaningful. For many, the path forward is not immediately clear, and that is OK. The journey begins with giving yourself permission to explore what engages and excites you, even if you are unsure where it might lead.

Too often, career decisions are shaped by familiarity or security, yet these do not always lead to long-term fulfilment. While stability matters, ignoring what excites you can lead to dissatisfaction, unrealised potential, and the quiet question of, “What if?” The cost of always playing it safe is never knowing what might have been possible.

Following your passion is not about taking reckless risks. It is about integrating what excites you into your professional path, staying curious, and recognising that fulfilment often comes from aligning your work with what genuinely interests you.

This journey requires courage to explore, resilience to adapt, and self-awareness to recognise opportunities. Passion is not always about an immediate change, but about making room to explore possibilities, aligning your work with your strengths and values over time.

While this Insight focuses on your current passions, this is just the beginning. Soon, we will examine how to broaden your perspective, uncover new opportunities, and apply your passions in ways that create real impact.

REFLECTIVE QUESTION

What have you always been naturally drawn to?

Reflecting on what you were drawn to as a child can reveal deep-seated interests that still influence you today.

Begin by recalling your earliest memories and identifying activities, environments, or subjects that consistently captured your attention. Consider how they made you feel. Did they spark curiosity, excitement, or joy?

Think about role models or influential figures who shaped your interests. Who did you admire, and why?

Reflect on natural talents or strengths that stood out in your daily life. Consider how you spent your free time. Were there particular hobbies, projects, or activities that absorbed you?

Identify any recurring themes in your interests. Have these passions persisted into adulthood, or have they faded? If they are no longer part of your life, think about why. Could they be rekindled in a new way?

If childhood does not hold clear answers, focus on your present. What subjects, work, or activities do you gravitate towards today? What makes you feel fully engaged and deeply curious?

Consider the tasks that make you lose track of time. What kind of work excites you? Which activities align with your values?

Passion often leaves clues in the things you daydream about, the books you are drawn to, or the conversations that inspire you. Paying attention to these can help you recognise what matters deeply to you.

If nothing immediately stands out, that is okay.

Passion does not always reveal itself instantly, it often emerges through exploration, reflection, and small steps towards what excites you.
